Chen Style

Chen style Tai Chi is the oldest of the five recognised styles of Tai Chi (Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu-Shi or Hao, and Sun). Drawing from the concept of balance between ying and yang, the style harmonises hardness with softness, the fast with the slow. The movements are characterised by many long and low stances, emphasising stability. A physically more demanding style, it tends to be favoured by younger, more agile students and practitioners.

Chen style Tai Chi has several variations. The Old frame, or Lao Jia, is the family form prior to the influence of Zhiang Fa and Yang Lu Chan. (This combines the family’s Yi Lu and Pao Chui techniques.) The New frame, or Xin Jia, incorporates some of their ideas. In particular the new frame incorporates the twisting movements of “Silk Reeling” which gives the forms a more tangible flowing characteristic. More recently the small frame, or Xiao Jia, has become more widely known. The Zhao Bao style of Tai Chi is strikingly similar to the small frame with some believing that in fact Zhao Bao is simply an evolution of the small frame. Zhao Bao tai chi traces back to Chen Qing-Ping (1795-1868), a disciple of Chen You Pen, who moved to Zhaobaozhen, but may date back further, being originally a form kept to close family members only.

Tai Bai Lung (Chief Instructor) has trained in Chinese martial arts for over 40 years and has studied Tai Chi Chuan under Chi Sifu, Won Lu San and Chen family. He is also studying Chinese language and writing. To understand Chinese Tai Chi Chuan one must understand Chinese ways. There are a lot of western ideas and nonsense about Tai Chi Chuan that it is a yoga dance for health… Although health is an important part of Tai Chi Chuan, it is not the main reason for its development. Tai Chi Chuan means “Great Ultimate Fist” – this then is a martial art with health benefits. We will not allow western nonsense in, thus we keep to the highest possible standard.
