Bai Ying Xue
Xiao: Sun Style Tai Chi Chuan
Sun style Tai Chi is not so
well known as Yang or Chen and is relatively young, being the most modern
of the five recognised styles. It was originated in the early 20th
century by Sun Lu-tang who learnt Tai Chi having already mastered Hsing-I and Pa Kua. His style
of Tai Chi Chuan is characterised by small
compact circular movements and high stances. The steps are more nimble and
the body is more agile. A light, fast style, it combines skills of all
three internal martial art systems: Hsing-I, Pa Kua, and Tai Chi. It emphasises the importance of
skill, sensitivity and technique over development of exception strength or
speed. As the style’s stances are relatively high, and not so
physically demanding, it is often favoured by older students and
practitioners. Sun Lu-tang’s daughter Sun Jian-Yun
is reported as saying that he only practised Tai Chi in his old age.
The Bai Ying school has had a long association with the White Dragon School
which strictly teaches Yang and,
to a few students, Chen style
Tai Chi. The Bai Ying school was started by Tai Bai Lung who gives some background to its founding:
“I believe
that other styles of Tai Chi Chuan should also be
taught so, after more than 40 years training, I decided to start the Hundred Heroes School
in honour of those who have developed Tai Chi over the last two thousand
years.”
“I have
learned Wu and Sun styles separately from my main training, learning
patterns from Chinese friends who knew them well. However, for many years I
did not have much time to practise as much as I would have wished. Now that
I train less in the ‘hard’ styles I have more time to devote to
train and develop these styles with the help of the White Dragon
Association.”
“The Bai Ying school operates its own classes in conjunction
with the White Dragon Association, teaching these styles, collectively
called the ‘Open and Closed System’ that still uses the eight
principles of Tai Chi, though in a different way. Together with this style,
students will also learn Chi Kung, Acupressure, Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal
Medicine and Wu Sing. Those who reach ‘closed door’ status will
also have the opportunity to learn Wu Dang Temple Tai
Chi. This is the original style from where all styles of Tai Chi
derive.”

"The softest things in the world
overcome the hardest. Non-being penetrates even where there is no space.
Through this I know the value of non-action. Teaching without words and the
value of non-action
are understood by few in the
world." - Lao zu
