Wu Dang Temple

Wu Dang Tai Chi Chuan was founded by the thirteenth century Taoist monk Chang San Feng by combining early forms of Shaolin and Wu Dang Temple martial arts. The difference between them is that Wu Dang uses the theory of I Ching and Taoist breathing techniques, whereas Shaolin does not.

As a Taoist priest in the early Yuan Dynasty, he watched Shaolin monks practise martial arts and through that they were using too much strength and heavy, unhealthy breathing which was not good. One day Chang San Feng witnessed a fight between a crane and a snake and noticed how relaxed they were in their breathing quick but always with a soft and hard combination of power. The fight would go on for hours and yet they were always relaxed. This inspired him to modify his comparatively hard Shaolin Kung Fu into a softer style which was to become known as Wu Dang Tai Chi Chuan. Form this style the Chen, Yang, Wu and
Sun styles have developed.

Thus Wu Dang is the original form of these arts, leading to spiritual development, understanding of nature, self defence and so much more. A high level of commitment is required in order to successfully learn the style. Training is normally only offered to those students who have completed training in Yang, Chen, or Sun styles
